Neottoman: 2015-21

Neottoman is a multifaceted exploration of Islamist ideologies and their fabricated neo-conservative norms, offering a critical yet playful lens on the mechanisms of ideology-making and the cultural fiction they create. The ongoing project weaves together fictional and documentary elements to construct a layered narrative that shifts fluidly between reality and imagination. Employing a variety of media—including found web pages, 3D renderings, video, and text—it blurs the boundaries between satire and critique, revealing the surreal and often contradictory nature of religious and ideological constructs.

During the COVID lockdown, the project expanded into performative experimentation. Using an Ottoman soldier’s headgear as a prop, I incorporated ballet movements and engaged in durational activities, further exploring the tensions between tradition, absurdity, and contemporary identity.
