Implosion, 2001

C-print, Video Loop

This photograph and the video was shot during the demolition of Brooklyn’s Maspeth Holders twin gas tanks at 7 a.m. on Sunday, July 15, 2001. When they were built by the Brooklyn Union Gas Company in 1927 and 1948 on Maspeth Avenue in Greenpoint, the 400-foot-tall steel tanks were the largest gas holders in the world and became an icon of northern Brooklyn. This demolition marked a significant transformation in the Brooklyn skyline and its relentless gentrification in years to come.
